Starting to Exercise Safely at Any Age
How to begin a sustainable exercise routine — and when to check with your doctor first.
Regular physical activity strengthens the heart, bones and muscles, improves mood and reduces the risk of many chronic diseases. The best exercise is one you enjoy and can sustain.
How much is enough?
Most adults benefit from at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week, such as brisk walking, plus two sessions of muscle-strengthening exercise.
Getting started
- Start slowly and build up gradually
- Warm up and cool down
- Wear supportive footwear
- Listen to your body and rest when needed
Check with your doctor first if…
You have heart disease, diabetes, joint problems, or experience chest pain, dizziness or breathlessness during activity.
